Sodas, Sugar and Smiles

A Dental Focus on Dental Talk for Teens
Soda and sugar have a very negative effect on our smiles. The acid found in both regular and diet sodas affect bone density. Unfortunately, statistics show that only 19 percent of girls between the ages of 9 to 19 are getting the recommended amount of calcium per day. By the age of 16, girls typically accumulate between 90 and 97 percent of their total bone mass, so calcium intake and absorption is vital. Unfortunately, soda consumption is playing a negative role and keeping girls from better bone density. When people don’t have the recommended amounts of calcium and lower bone density as a result, they are at a much higher risk for fractures and osteoporosis. Bone density is key in maintaining a healthy smile, as the jaw bone provides a much needed support system for the teeth. Consult your dentist with any questions you have on calcium and bone density.
